Pope's Resignation Surprises Local Residents
Saucon Valley residents expressed surprise and a degree of consternation at news of Pope Benedict XVI's announcement Monday that he will retire from the papacy Feb. 28.

Just as people all over the world did, residents of the Saucon Valley expressed surprise Monday upon hearing that Pope Benedict XVI will retire Feb. 28.
The pope cited his age and failing health in making his announcement, according to news sources.
Allentown Diocese Bishop John Barres said in a statement Monday that Pope Benedict XVI's decision to resign is "an act of great courage and humility."

"(I) have a feeling he's very sick," wrote reader Elaine Kovacs, who added that she liked Pope Benedict XVI and feels "bad" that he is stepping down.
Barbara Singer Vatza agreed that health probably played a role, but questioned whether the Pope's decision was entirely his own.
"It is time to start electing younger popes," she said.
Reader Sunny Sonnenrein pointed out the significance of the Pope's announcement within the historical context of the Papacy.
"There hasn't been a resignation in almost 600 years," she said. "That doesn't make resigning wrong, just unusual."
Sonnenrein theorized that "perhaps it is the rational German in him that makes him say 'I'm old and stepping down before I become ineffective as a pontiff.'"
Brenda Sanchez said she thinks the announcement could be a sign that "something (is) cooking and it's not good."
"Only God knows what's coming. I certainly know that difficult roads are approaching and our faith will be tested," she wrote.
