Coombs Foundation to Boost Scholarship Awards

Organizers of the second annual Edward Taylor Coombs golf outing and scholarship award dinner plan to give away $10,000 more in scholarships than last year.

In so many ways 34 was a special number. It was Hatboro-Horsham High School lacrosse standout Eddie Coombs' number at Marist College, where he played as a freshman until his untimely death.

Then, last year, Coombs' number played out as the 34th foursome–comprised of Coombs' Marist teammates–took to the greens for the first-ever golf outing as part of the 501c3 nonprofit Edward Taylor Coombs Foundation

"It was too many," his father, Eric Coombs, said of the turnout.

For this year's July 15 golf outing at Commonwealth National Golf Club, Mr. Coombs said 28 to 30 foursomes would be much more manageable. As of now, he said spots are still available for golfing, as well as for the subsequent scholarship award dinner.

During last year's dinner, the foundation established to honor the late Hatter to 15 Hatboro-Horsham High School seniors. But, this year, Mr. Coombs said close to $35,000 in scholarship money–about $13,000 for Hatboro-Horsham seniors–will be given away that night.
