Last year, the school district held a public hearing to decide the future of the elementary school's aging building and consider merging the school's attendance area with Crooked Billet Elementary School.

Pennypack Elementary School had been in need of major upgrades including a roof replacement, a new boiler, food-prep equipment and electrical system, district officials said at the time.

Ultimately, officials decided to close the elementary school. The district's brand-new school, Crooked Billet Elementary School, will be comprised of all children living within the borough of Hatboro, and will serve approximately 500 students from kindergarten through grade five.
