Hatboro OKs 4-Year Police Contract

The Hatboro Police Department's 14 uniformed officers will see pay increases over the next four years as part of a contract that the Hatboro Borough Council approved on Monday night.

Even with the $45,000 yearly expense associated with the contract, primarily resulting from the 3.75 percent annual salary increases over the life of the contract–which begins on Jan. 1 and continues through Dec. 31, 2017–Hatboro Council President John Zygmont said the borough will save $20,000 per year on health insurance. 

"We negotiated doubling the co-pays on the health insurance," Zygmont told Patch. 

Besides the 14 police officers, Zygmont said the contract also covers half of the insurance costs for two police retirees. 

Police Chief James Gardner is considered an "administrator," according to Zygmont and is therefore "outside of the bargaining unit." His salary and benefits are covered elsewhere in the borough's budget.

The police contract will not impact borough taxes for the coming year, which Zygmont said is "still netting out to no tax increase."
