Forgotten speed limit ordinance finally recognized for West Second Street

In 2002, council approved a speed limit change for West Second Street, but it was never put in place

Talk about not following the rules of government.

Ordinance No. 1680, added to the borough code on May 15, 2002, was supposed to enforce a 25 mph speed limit on West Second Street between Richardson Road and Valley Forge Road.

But it never happened.

During a recent Lansdale Borough Public Safety Committee report, councilman and committee chair Mike Sobel reported that last month’s meeting involved a discussion on a request from a resident on reducing the speed limit on the 800 block of West Second Street between the two roads.

Sobel said there was already a 2002 ordinance on the books that did just that, but signs were never posted.

“They were never put up,” Sobel said. “It will be done quickly at this point.”

In other committee news, there is a tentative closure of North Richardson Avenue from Main Street to Mill Street for First Friday.

Sobel said the closure would make room for the arts alliance or a “couple of other things.”

He said the committee would revisit the issue in June.

Thirdly, there was a request from the North Penn YMCA and Panico’s to host a 5K Race and Walk on an upcoming Wednesday evening.

Sobel said the committee would not support the route proposed for the event.

“The route blocks off a lot of neighborhoods from any kind of access,” he said. “We denied it as it is. We will try to explore an alternate route for them.”
