Lansdale Cannoneers, Beloved Youth Football And Cheer Club, Continues To Thrive

The Cannoneers, which have been a fixture in the greater North Penn community for 60 years, are introducing new features this year.

LANSDALE, PA — One of the greater Lansdale area's longest running nonprofits is working hard to keep its youth football and cheerleading organization running.

The Lansdale Cannoneers, a fixture in the North Penn community for more than 60 years, has had thousands of children pass through their many programs over the decades. But in recent years, organizers say they have seen a decline in participation. They chalk this up to the North Penn School District's decision to not allow community program flyers to be sent home with students from school.

"This has greatly impacted many organizations around the North Penn area over the last 5-10 years," Cannoneers volunteer Jim Laky told Patch. "Many organizations have had decreasing enrollment numbers because parents are not aware of what is available to their children."

But Laky assured that the Cannoneers had no plans to reduce the size of their organization or their offerings. Quite the opposite, in fact.

The Cannoneers Pop Warner league, Bux-Mont, is the largest in the country. Programs for younger players, including flag football for 4-year-olds to 7-year-olds, and cheerleading for 3 and 4-year-olds, is free.

Registration for tackle football and older cheerleaders is $75. New participants receive personalized, reversible jerseys if they register by June 1.

Laky added that the Cannonners will have a special entrance tunnel for kids to enter games this season as well.

Sports can reach children in a way that few other things can.

"Our programs strive continually to provide children with positive exposure to the ideals of team play and fairness and to the idea that concentrated effort can help them achieve a goal," the Cannoneers mission statement reads. "We believe that in developing these traits, our young children will not only be successful athletically, but throughout all aspects of their lives."
