Viral Social Post Generates Much Love For Lansdale Chocolate Shop Before Valentine's Day
Steve Colsher put up a Facebook post in late January praising Bergin's Chocolates and urging patronage at the business. It went viral.
LANSDALE, PA — A local, family-run chocolate shop that has been operating in the community for close to 90 years got much love ahead of the Valentine's Day weekend thanks to a customer's social media post about his visit, a commentary that ended up going viral and drove new shoppers to the longstanding business.
Steve Colsher of Lansdale put up a post on his Facebook page in late January about Bergin's Chocolates on Morris Road, a business he says he drove by to and from work for nearly three decades, but never stopped in — until recently.
"I always passed by this little place that sits back off the road with a little sign, 'Bergins chocolate," Colsher wrote on Jan. 23.

Colsher said he finally decided to stop in the shop and purchase some chocolate. What he saw took him back to a different era.
"Just being in there seem to take me back in time," he posted.

Colsher's post ended up going viral; his story has been told in various media outlets throughout the region.
Colsher, in his post, urged people to visit the business, since he said it would be terrible to see a longstanding institution like Bergin's be forced to close after 87 years in operation.
During his visit, one of the owner's told Colsher that the business wasn't sure how much longer it could survive since "everyone gets their chocolate at cvs, amazon whatever," Colsher posted.
Since the post first went up, it has had thousands of shares and hundreds of comments.
Colsher recently spoke to Channel 6 ABC Action News in Philadelphia about his story, one that has reportedly helped drive many new customers to the business, which today is run by two grandchildren of the original owner who opened up shop back in the 1930s.
In follow up Facebook posts, Colsher urged people to not just share the post, but actually visit Bergin's and buy some of their chocolates.
"Keep this family business going," he posted in a follow up post. "I have no skin in this game. Just trying to save what little we have left from the past. We can do it."
Bergin's Chocolates is located at 2634 Morris Road in Lansdale.
