Longtime North Wales Man, Legendary Basketball Coach Joseph Heyer Dies

A member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Joseph Heyer inspired generations.

NORTH WALES, PA — A former longtime resident of North Wales and a legendary basketball player and coach in the Delaware Valley has died. Joseph William Heyer Jr. was 84.

A member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Joseph Heyer inspired generations of young student-athletes under his tutelage at multiple schools. Heyer coached and taught at North Penn High School for years. His coaching career at North Penn and Cardinal Doughtery spanned 38 years, according to his obituary.

"Mr. Heyer was a dedicated husband, father, uncle, grandfather, educator, basketball coach, baseball coach, tennis enthusiast and avid gardener," his obituary reads. "He was also well-known in Philadelphia basketball circles as one of the city's all-time sharpshooters."

Heyer also enjoyed a successful playing career in both basketball and baseball at La Salle College High School and then later at La Salle College.
