Montco Court To Appoint Replacement For Resigned Towamencin Supervisor

Supervisor Laura Smith resigned after a video mimicking Elon Musk's hand gesture, which critics said was Nazi.

TOWAMENCIN TOWNSHIP, PA — Towamencin has been unable to replace their recently resigned township supervisor, and a county court is now seeking applications to fill the position.

Supervisor Laura Smith resigned after she published a video on Tiktok in late January giving a hand gesture similar to the one given by Elon Musk during a rally. The gesture was widely speculated to be a Nazi salute.

"Just checking in on my friends who are struggling this week," she said in the video, grinning broadly and placing her hand on her chest. "My heart goes out to you, hope you're doing okay."

She then threw her arm straight out in an imitation of Musk's gesture, which has been widely compared to the Nazi salute.

Smith said she did not believe that Musk's gesture was Nazi, and in a comment reply on the since deleted post, added that her video was meant to "poke fun at the absurdity" of the situation.

In the fallout from the post, Smith resigned almost immediately.

The township first had the opportunity to fill the post, but the board was unable to agree on a candidate. The process now falls to the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas.

Applications including a resume and cover letter should be sent to Mike.Kehs@montgomerycountypa.gov. All candidates must be registered voters and residents of Towamencin Township for at least a year. Applications must be received by April 18.
