Truck Drove Under 'Fully Operational' Gates To Hit Freight Train In Lansdale: PD

LANSDALE, PA — Additional details have emerged in the crash involving a truck and a freight train in Lansdale that left two teenagers seriously injured.

The incident occurred at about 2:51 a.m. on July 1.

Police said the vehicle driven by the teens was a white 2023 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

The truck drove under railroad crossing gates, which were fully operational, with both visual signals and audible alarms activated, authorities said.

The truck slammed into the freight train as it was already three or four cars through the intersection.

The force of the truck slamming into the train was so powerful than the freight car partially derailed, according to police.

No hazardous materials were spilled during the incident.

The truck caught fire, but the fire was extinguished by the time first responders arrived.

Both of the teens were trapped inside the vehicle after the crash, and authorities had to extricate them before Volunteer Medical Service Corps took them to Grand View Hospital.

They remained in critical condition there on Thursday.

Lansdale Detectives, the North Penn Crash Team, and the Montgomery County Detective Bureau are continuing to investigate the crash.

The incident shut down South Broad Street from Vine Street to Main Street for hours for the investigation and cleanup efforts by Lansdale Borough Public Works.
