[Update Sept. 11] Wegmans Wants to Sell Beer, Wine at New Market
Wegmans Food Market has requested a public hearing for a liquor license transfer into Montgomery Township, in order to serve beer, wine and liquor, and offer take-out beer, at a proposed restaurant inside the store being built at Montgomery Mall

Montgomery Township Supervisors Monday night approved a resolution to set a public hearing on a liquor license transfer for Wegmans on October 9 after 8 p.m.

Wegmans intends to operate a restaurant inside the new location, separated from its grocery store.

According to a letter from attorney Robert O’Hara III to township Manager Larry Gregan, Wegmans intends to transfer a Pennsylvania restaurant liquor license from outside Montgomery Township.
The liquor license will be transferred from the former Finn McCool’s that operated at 3120 Penn Avenue in Hatfield Township, under the name Canz Libations Hatfield Inc.
The restaurant will have a full menu, serving made-from-scratch foods and gourmet meals, according to O’Hara. It will be 200-seat restaurant with a separate entrance, but it will be open to the grocery store. An outdoor seating area parallel to North Wales Road is also proposed.
According to O’Hara, Wegmans “intends to sell beer, wine and spirits in its restaurant premises and beer ‘to go.’ The restaurant will be separate and apart from the grocery store and beer, wine and spirits will only be sold in the restaurant portio of the business, not the grocery store.”
Of the 81 Wegmans grocery stores and restaurants in Pennsylvania, 15 locations sell beer, wine and spirits, according to O’Hara.
There is one liquor license in Montgomery Township listed as inactive in the records of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. However, that license is expected to be transferred to Bonefish Grill, upon approval at a public hearing tonight.
An inactive license, according to O’Hara, indicates a problem with the license, “such as failure to properly place the license in safekeeping or to properly renew it.”
Therefore, Wegmans entered into a contract to purchase the license from Canz Libations Inc.
Montgomery Township Supervisors officially approved the Wegmans development in June.
The market will be located at the former site of Boscov's, which is currently under construction.
