When the woman tried to get away Arevalo put his hand around her neck and squeezed, according to authorities. He then put her in a chokehold, preventing her from breathing.
The woman was able to escape and call 911, and Arevalo fled the home, authorities said.
By late Sunday morning, police were able to track him to the area of Wood Street and Madison Street, and he was arrested. He had stolen one small item from the woman's home, according to police.
Investigators said Arevalo entered the United States through Texas from Guatemala in 2023.
