BRISTOL TOWNSHIP, PA — A longtime Bucks County firefighter has died from his injuries battling a fire at a Croydon home on Aug. 8, officials said.

Lower Bucks County fire companies are mourning the loss of Croydon Fire Company Station 11 Fire Police Capt. Ed Margavich, who succumbed to injuries over the weekend.

Margavich, 81, was among three firefighters injured in a blaze on the 700 block of Cedar Avenue in Bristol Township, which fire officials said was intentionally set. A van and the home was destroyed, but all five occupants were rescued.

While directing traffic at the scene, Margavich returned to the firehouse to gather equipment. Inside, he fell and broke his femur. Despite treatment, his condition worsened, and a week later, he died from his injuries, Action News reported.

Margavich had a 65-year career as a firefighter. He was still one of the company's most active members, often responding to calls in the middle of the night, fire officials said.

"It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the untimely passing of Past Station 14 Chief and current Fire Police Capt. Ed Margavich," The Croydon Fire Company Station 11 said. "Captain Margavich succumbed to injuries he suffered while operating on a dwelling fire on Aug. 8. Ed will be missed greatly, and we ask for thoughts and prayers from the community for his family and all who knew and loved him."

The Third District Fire Company said Margavich joined its organization in 1960.

"He was known for his kindness, wisdom, and the infectious laughter that brightened our meetings," the fire department said. "His spirit will be missed by all."

A memorial has been placed in front of Station 14 in honor of Chief Margavich, and may be visited by the community at any time. Community members have begun leaving flowers.

The death was the first time in Station 14's 70-year history, officials said.

"It's a big loss for us, it really is," said Joe Gasper, the department's public information officer told Action News. "There's no words. Honestly, we're shocked."
