LOWER BUCKS COUNTY, PA — Bucks County is starting construction this month on a one-mile trail extension within Core Creek Park that includes the county's first floating boardwalk.

The project —which went before the Bucks County Planning Commission recently — will connect existing park trails and an existing picnic area to the intersection of Woodbourne and Ellis roads in Middletown Township.

Starting around April 21, the existing Core Creek Park trail between Pavilion 1 and Pavilion 11 will be temporarily closed for construction, county officials said.

Construction will cost nearly $3 million and should be completed next year. The project's planning began in 2018.

The 10-foot-wide shared-use trail will also include a central rest area on the boardwalk.

The extension will cross a tributary of Lake Luxembourg and require the installation of a 150-foot floating boardwalk with 25-foot ramps at each end. The ramps are designed to adjust to lake level fluctuations, ensuring trail accessibility, according to county officials.

The new trail will link a picnic area to the intersection of Ellis and Woodbourne roads. It will run east along Tollgate Road adjacent to Lake Luxembourg, then pivot north along the lake’s coastline, before continuing east between Ellis Road and Lake Luxembourg, ending at an existing fishing area on Woodbourne Road.

The new Core Creek Park trail is part of the broader Neshaminy Greenway Trail, a proposed alignment that will eventually connect communities and recreational facilities along Neshaminy Creek from Chalfont Borough to the Delaware River.

The project aligns with the county’s recent investments in pedestrian and bicycling trails. It includes a planned short trail in Levittown and the opening of the 2.5-mile Newtown Rail Trail in Upper Southampton, with future expansion planned to the Churchville Nature Center in Northampton Township.
