Last Chance, Middletown ... Stop Gathering In The Parks

Township officials said they'll close Middletown's parks if group gatherings in them don't stop during the coronavirus shutdown.

MIDDLETOWN, PA — Officials in Middletown say they're making "one final effort" to get people to stop congregating in township parks — which have so far remained open during the coronavirus shutdown.

In a social media post, township officials say the problem has been especially bad at Middletown Community Park. In the past few days, they said, groups of people have been seen gathering in local parks for lacrosse practice, softball practice, skate park use and picnic table use.

While parks remain open to give residents somewhere to stretch their legs during the shutdown, "high-touch" areas, like playgrounds, basketball courts and the skate park are closed.

"We are asking the public one final time to stop engaging in active and group recreation at township park facilities," Middletown officials said in the post. "If this request continues to be ignored, the township will have no other option but to close our facilities until further notice."

"We realize our parks are an important outlet for individuals and families needing an escape and a place to exercise," township officials said. "Engaging in group activities and disregarding amenity closures jeopardizes the health of our community.

"We believe it is in the best interest of the community and public health to ensure our facilities do not become a breeding ground for the coronavirus. We appreciate the cooperation, patience, and understanding of the community as we face difficult decisions every day."
