Levittown-Based Cabinet Company Shuts Down

Solid Wood Cabinets said factors including new U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods made 2019 a tough year.

BRISTOL TOWNSHIP, PA — Bristol-based Solid Wood Cabinets has closed and all of its assets will be liquidated by creditors, the company has announced.

The discount cabinet company, which was established in 2002 and had locations throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey, announced the sudden closure on its website.

"Unfortunately due to the circumstances described below The Solid Wood Cabinet Company, LLC. has been forced to close down its business operations immediately and all of its assets will be liquidated by the secured creditor," the company said in a statement. "Customers should seek advice from their credit card or financing provider regarding merchandise that has not yet been received."

The company said 2019 brought a "perfect storm of issues" that included a 25 percent tariff imposed by the Trump administration on cabinets the company imported from China. Then, a petition by domestic cabinet makers caused a large number of Chinese factories to stop producing products for the U.S. market, the company said.

"This was catastrophic to us and meant that our supply of cabinets virtually dried up, leaving us to find alternative products domestically," the company said in the statement.

The company was able to find a cabinet source in the U.S., but delays in supply and increases in product costs hurt sales, according to the statement.

"Although we tried until the last days to reorganize our business affairs and obtain the support of our creditors, vendors and potential new investors, we were sadly unable to achieve this objective," the statement said.

According to the Solid Wood Cabinets website, the company sold more than 1 million pieces of cabinetry during its roughly 18-year run. Its headquarters are located on Bristol Pike in Levittown.
