Red-Light Cameras Activated In Bristol Township

Bristol Township Police said the red-light camera program rolled out on Monday to promote safety and reduce drivers running red lights.

BRISTOL TOWNSHIP, PA — Bristol Township has launched a new red-light camera program, joining numerous communities seeking to bolster safety in the Philadelphia region.

Red-light safety cameras were activated Monday on Bristol Pike at Green Lane and also at Bristol Pike at Edgely Road, Sgt. Jason Mancuso said.

For the first 60 days, the program will operate under a warning period. Police said no fines will be issued during that time. Drivers who fail to stop at a red light will receive a warning notice, giving them a chance to adjust their driving habits before enforcement begins.

"In an effort to make roadways safer for all who live, work, and travel through our community, this initiative is part of the township’s ongoing commitment to reducing dangerous driving behaviors, preventing crashes, and saving lives," Mancuso said.

Mancuso said the cameras are about prevention, not punishment, and serve as "a constant reminder to slow down, stay alert, and respect the rules of the road."

Red-light camera programs have launched in Warrington and Bensalem townships, and in Abington Township in Montgomery County.

Bristol Township will not receive any proceeds from the violations issued, Mancuso said. The funds are used to pay for the equipment, and the remainder goes to PennDOT to upgrade intersections throughout the state.

Enforcement — and monetary fines of $100— will begin immediately after the 60-day warning period, Mancuso said.

Nationwide studies have shown that red-light cameras significantly reduce the number of serious crashes caused by drivers running red lights.

By encouraging compliance with traffic signals, these systems help:

  • Prevent life-threatening T-bone collisions
  • Reduce overall intersection crashes
  • Encourage safer driving habits throughout the community
  • Protect pedestrians and cyclists at busy crossings
