PENNSYLVANIA — The Kansas City Chiefs are ready to battle it out with the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV in Miami on Feb. 2, and there will be several reasons for Pennsylvania residents, and Penn State fans in particular, to cheer when they do.

A total of five former Nittany Lions will suit up on one of the biggest stages in professional sports.

And from the 49ers:

  • Kevin Givens, defensive tackle, Altoona, PA
  • Robbie Gould, placekicker, Jersey Shore, PA

The Chiefs knocked out the Tennessee Titans 35-24 to lock in the team’s first trip to the Super Bowl in 50 years. On the other side of the ball, the 49ers are in the championship game for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes leads a Chiefs team that’s put up a combined 86 points in the opening two games of the post-season. The potent Kansas City offense will, however, have to go through a 49ers defense that boasts the star power of Nick Bosa, Richard Sherman and Fred Warner.

Beyond the Penn State connection, local fans can also look to Montgomery County native Tanoh Kpassagnon for a reason to cheer. The former Villanova Wildcat graduated from Wissahickon High School in Ambler in 2012. He came up huge in the AFC title game this past weekend, sacking Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill and giving the Chiefs the ball back at a decisive 4th quarter moment:

Kpassagnon isn't the only reason for Philly-area fans to pull for the Chiefs: Kansas City also boasts longtime Eagles star LeSean McCoy, a Harrisburg area native who attended the University of Pittsburgh, and, of course, they're led by long time Eagles head coach Andy Reid.

San Francisco does earn one local connection in the form of Penn Charter graduate and offensive tackle, Justin Skule.

The Chiefs are 1.5 point favorites over the 49ers, according to spreads published on Thursday.
