Bam Margera Remains Free To Work On Sobriety: Chesco Judge

Judge Patrick Carmody denied a request from prosecutors to revoke Margera's bail in his case involving a fight with his brother, Jesse.

WEST CHESTER, PA —A Chester County judge Thursday denied a request from prosecutors to revoke Bam Margera's bail in an assault case in the wake of the former "Jackass" star being cited for causing a disturbance at 4:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Radnor Hotel.

Instead, Chester County Judge Patrick Carmody allowed the "Jackass" star to remain free on bail and work on his sobriety.

Margera, 43, is required to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings once a week and to wear an alcohol ankle monitor that tests his sweat to detect alcohol for 30 days.

"This is bigger than the case," the judge said. "It's about your welfare and the welfare of those around you."

Assistant District Attorney Zachary Yurick requested that the $50,000 bail be revoked because Margera was cited for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct just two weeks after he was allowed to remain free on bail in an unrelated assault case.

Margera's lawyer, Michael T. van der Veen of Philadelphia, said Margera has been following the conditions of bail and will continue to work on staying sober.

After the hearing, the attorney said his client would abide by the conditions set by the judge.

Margera, who resides in Los Angeles, will be staying in the Philadelphia area with friends until the assault case is resolved in the Chester County Justice Center.

Margera was held for court on July 27 on charges of simple assault and making terroristic threats in connection with a physical altercation at Margera's Chester County home, known as Castle Bam, in the 400 block of Hickory Hill Road, Pocopson Township.

The fight broke out during Margera's two-week visit to his hometown, West Chester. His brother testified in the preliminary hearing that Magera was hitting him in the face and acting out of control, noting his younger brother had been awake for days.
Margera, who grew up in West Chester, is a former professional skateboarder and stuntman, television personality, and filmmaker.

In the early 2000s, he became one of the stars on the MTV reality stunt show, "Jackass," and then created spin-off shows.

Margera's brother, Jesse, 44, said his younger brother has struggled with alcohol and drug addiction and has been in and out of recovery programs for many years.
