GOP Leader Resigns Amid Sex Assault Investigation
Robert J. Kerns will no longer head the Montgomery County Republican Committee; his successor will be selected Dec. 4

A Montgomery County Republican Committee representative announced Thursday that Chairman Robert J. Kerns has resigned his position, a day after it was reported that he is the subject of a sexual assault investigation.
“MCRC today received the resignation of its chairman, Robert J. Kerns. MCRC will follow the procedures outlined in its bylaws on the selection of a new party chairman,” said MCRC Executive Director John Kelemen. “All day-to-day activities of the committee will continue uninterrupted.”

Kelemen said that the resignation will be official on Friday at 5 p.m.; MCRC has no comment on media reports to a possible criminal investigation of Kerns.
Yesterday, it was reported that Kerns is being investigated for sexual assault after an alleged incident on Oct. 25.

Kerns was elected chairman of the organization in 2008; just one day prior to the alleged incident, Gov. Tom Corbett announced a truce between warring factions of the party, which had caused organization to suffer over the past 20 years.
