Former Humane Fire Co. Chief Laid to Rest

The Spring-Ford Community remembered a local hero on Saturday.

Roads in Royersford were blocked off as community members participated in the funeral services of Robert (Bob) Major, former chief of the Human Fire Company, and active member of the Royersford Fire Department.

Major, who was 79, died on June 8, with his family by his side, according to his obituary on Legacy.com.

Major joined the Humane Fire Co. in December of 1951 and held positions including chief, chief engineer, trustee and treasurer.

“The Major name became synonymous with the Humane Fire Co., which created a family tradition,” said a Royerford Fire Department Facebook post, noting that Major’s son, John, and grandson, Ryan, both held officer positions with the company, and Major’s brother, Buddy, was a 50-year member of the company.

“The Major tradition that Bobby created is currently being carried on today through his wife Michelle and grandson in-law William Latch,” said Royersford Fire Department.

A service was held for Major at St. James United Church of Christ on South Limerick Road, followed by a procession to Limerick Garden of Memories and a reception at the New Hanover Fire Company.
