For the Birds: An Annual Christmas Count

You can volunteer to join the Audubon Society's 114th Annual Christmas Bird Count that began Saturday and continues through Jan. 5.

Pennsylvania Game Commission officials want areaΒ wildlife enthusiasts to join volunteers acrossΒ the country in the Audubon Society’s 114th Annual ChristmasΒ BirdΒ Count, which began Saturday and continuesΒ throughΒ Jan. 5.

According to a posting on the commission's website, the Christmas Bird Count isΒ the longest-running citizen-science survey in the world. TheΒ data collected allows researchers, conservation biologists and others to study the long-term health and status ofΒ birdΒ populations across North America.

LocalΒ countsΒ occur on one day, from now throughΒ Jan. 5. Volunteers can pick a convenient circle, or participate in more than oneΒ count. Go here to find a circle.

Although there is a specific methodology to theΒ count, everyone can participate. TheΒ countΒ takes place within β€œcountΒ circles,” which focus on specific geographical areas. AnΒ experienced birdwatcher leads each circle.

You canΒ even stay at home and report theΒ birdsΒ that visit yourΒ backyard feeders,Β if youΒ live within the boundaries of aΒ countΒ circle, according to the website.Β

There is no fee to participate in the ChristmasΒ BirdΒ Count.
