Lower Moreland to Offer Free Heart Screenings for its Students

The Lower Moreland School Board announced Tuesday that it will offer free heart screenings for their students ages 10-19 on May 18.

The screenings are in coordination with a charity called Simon’s Fund, which was established in 2005 after Phyllis and Darren Sudman lost their 3-month-old son to a heart defect called Long QT Syndrome.

Phyllis is a former Lower Moreland graduate, and the charity helps raise awareness for kids and teenagers who don’t regularly get their hearts checked.

Lower Moreland Superintendent Marykay Feeley said the screenings will be conducted at Pine Road Elementary, but the final details are still being worked out. The location could be changed.

“This whole bottom floor will be taken over by doctors, as well as nurses who will be volunteering,” Feeley said.

The charity can help save children’s lives by discovering any abnormalities at an early age. If there is a problem found with a child revealed on the screening, additional screening will be provided right at the school.

“They'll do the screening, and if there might be a problem, they will given another level of testing right here,” Feeley said. “It's really an awesome opportunity. When they came forward to us, It was a no brainer (to have the event)."
