Copper Thieves Strike Homes for Sale in Lower Providence: Police

Two homes for sale were reportedly stripped of copper piping on May 24.

Lower Providence Police are investigating a pair of burglaries to homes for sale in the township.

On May 24, a realtor contacted police to report that copper piping had been stolen from a home on the 2700 block of Lantern Lane. The home, which became vacant after the owner moved into a new home in State College, had been ransacked, with copper piping being removed from the baseboard heaters, the ceiling in the basement and the hot-water heater, according to the report.

There were no signs of forced entry.

Most of the neighbors informed police that they had not noticed anything out of the ordinary, but one woman stated that she heard what sounded like trash cans being dragged around 6 a.m. The woman added that she observed an unfamiliar large, red pickup truck in the driveway, which quickly pulled out and left the area.

Later that day, an officer with the West Conshohocken Police Department observed an unoccupied suspicious red pickup truck belonging to a known "scrapper" and possible drug addict, but police were unable to locate him, the report states.

A second report of copper theft was reported to police that same day, from a home for sale on the 2700 block of Egypt Road, according to the report. The home, which had been previously broken into on May 10, sustained extensive damage to the basement, and copper piping was again stolen from the ceiling, the report states.

The investigations into these two incidents are ongoing.
