Philadelphia Art Museum Comes to Library
Lower Providence Community Library will host an Aug. 20 presentation on "Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse: Visions of Arcadia."
As part of its adult programming, the will host the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s presentation on “Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse: Visions of Arcadia.”
The presentation is scheduled for Aug. 20 at 7 p.m., and will feature a colorful, digitally illustrated lecture, offered by a trained Art Museum guide.
According to Meg Mozi, who works with Lower Providence Library’s Adult Services, the presentation coincides with the Art Museum’s current exhibition of the same name.

“This is an outreach lecture offered by the museum’s Accessible Programs, for people who cannot come to the museum due to age-related limitations or disabilities,” Mozi said in an e-mail. “We have had Art Museum speakers come to the library for several past exhibition lectures, and they have been widely popular.”
According to Mozi, the Art Museum contacts Lower Providence Library with each upcoming exhibition for lecture opportunities. The current exhibition runs from June 20 – Sept. 2.

In March, the library hosted “Van Gogh: Up Close,” with 120 people in attendance, Mozi said.
“We’ve found that while some people attend, because they can’t get to the museum, others come because they’d like a preview of the exhibit, and plan on visiting the museum, as well,” Mozi said.
According to the Philadelphia Museum of Art website, the current exhibition explores the theme of an earthly paradise, or Arcadia, in three such paintings of the early 1900s:
- Paul Gauguin’s Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (1898)
- Paul Cézanne’s The Large Bathers (1906)
- Henri Matisse’s Bathers by a River (1909-17)
A Lower Providence Library promotional flyer on the event states that these paintings bring viewers to the very foundation of modern art.
The event is free and open to the public, and is made possible in part through the support of the Audubon Women’s Club.
According to Mozi, the Aug. 20 art lecture is just one of several featured events that adult patrons can look forward to in the near future.
“I would say the ongoing mission of our adult programs is to be a gathering place for the community,” Mozi said.” And, provide intellectual and cultural programs for our patrons.”
