Police Blotter: Update on Pawlings Road Moped Accident

Inexperience of new scooter driver may have contributed to a minor traffic accident in Audubon, July 25.

According to Lower Providence Police, a single vehicle traffic accident occurred, July 25 near Pawlings and Audubon roads.

The operator of the vehicle, a moped scooter, was reported to be travelling north on the mid-block of Pawlings Road, south of Audubon Road. According to the police report, another vehicle was traveling behind the scooter operator, when the vehicle legally passed the scooter, using the southbound travel lane.

Upon attempting to merge back into the northbound travel lane, the report states that the scooter operator lost control, and was able to lay down his vehicle on the right shoulder of Pawlings Road.

The scooter driver told police that he had driven off the roadway, because he felt the passing vehicle was too close.

The driver of the passing vehicle told police that numerous vehicles were passing the scooter, who the driver said was driving close to the side of the road. The driver also stated that the scooter operator was traveling 25-miles-per-hour in a posted 45-mile-per-hour zone.

The police report that the scooter operator sustained minor scrapes to the left arm and knee, and reported pain in the right foot. The scooter operator was transported form the scene by Lower Providence Ambulance and taken to Montgomery Hospital.

The scooter operator stated to police that he had just purchased the moped scooter the day before, and was inexperienced in operating the vehicle, which may have contributed to the accident.

Police were dispatched, at approximately 2:15 p.m. As a result from the traffic accident, the northbound lane of Pawlings Road was partially closed for 30 to 60 minutes, with Lower Providence police directing traffic around the scene.
