- 1) Reaction to Roe v. Wade Being Overturned: The story was the overall most read in Chester County. It focused on local lawmakers reactions to the Supreme Court’s decision to return the decision of when and whether a woman can get an abortion back to the states. The reactions from the Democratic lawmakers, including Gov. Tom Wolf and Governor-elect Attorney General Josh Shapiro, and the locals including U.S. Rep Chrissy Houlahan, state Reps. Mary Scanlon, Melissa Shusterman, Dan Williams, Christina Sappey came in very fast. The Republicans did not respond so fast. The story also contains the view of Philadelphia Archbishop Nelson J. Perez and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.
- 2 ) Malvern-Based Acme Markets To Sell To Kroger Acme Markets, the Malvern-based supermarket chain, owned by Idaho-based Albertsons Cos, announces in October the company is in the process of being purchased by Kroger, based in Cincinnati, for $2O billion in stock. The deal is not expected to be finalized until 2024. Acme was founded in South Philadelphia and 161 supermarkets in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and New York.
- 3) Great Valley Graduate: Fatally Shot in Philadelphia Everett Beaureguard, 23, is remembered as a “bright light in the community.” Beauregard was shot at 12:30 a.m.in the neck by an unknown gunman in the 400 of North 35th Street as he was on his way home after a night out with friends.“A bright light in our community was dimmed this week in a tragic and senseless shooting in Philadelphia,” said U.S. Rep Kristine Howard, wrote.
- 4) Malvern Officer Involved Fatal Shooting. Malvern resident was fatally shot in her residence in the 800 block of Charleston Greene on May 19. Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan ruled June 2 the shooting was justified following an independent investigation of the shooting. According to an investigation, the woman pulled at 9 mm handgun at police officer responding to a call that the woman was suicidal. The woman stood up and aimed the gun at the police. He was finalizing plans to get his MBA and was active in the 2020 presidential election. The Great Valley community mourned his tragic death.
- 5) Ban Sexually Explicit Books In Great Valley A Great Valley School District mother sued the school district in federal court asking the court to ordered the district to remove that she identified as “sexually explicit” from the library shelves. Fenicia Redman named 22 defendants in the suit including Gov.-elect Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Gov. Tom Wolf, school officials and board members, police and prosecutors. The case is pending. In the latest filing, Redman asked that the books be placed in a restrictive area and only available to students of ages 18 and above. The books are Tantric Sex, Gender Queer, Fun Home, PUSH, and All Boys Aren't Blue.
