Climate Protest at Vanguard

A group of about 30, mostly seniors, from Earth Quaker Action Team, the Shalom Center, and the Elder Action Network took part in a protest against Vanguard on Tuesday, 09/19/2023 at their Malvern, PA HQ.

We met at the Target parking lot near Vanguard and walked to the traffic circle by one of the Vanguard entrances. We kept to public property and did not block roads.

We protested against Vanguard’s investments in new global fossil-fuel infrastructure, they are one of the largest private investors in that field. We also drew attention to their withdrawal from the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative. A few years ago they committed to ending such investments by 2050. We asked people to move their money from Vanguard.

Three Malvern police officers along with three Vanguard security personal watched us from across the street. A few cars rounding the public circle honked in support of our protest.

Shortly thereafter two additional Malvern police officers, along with their vehicles, blocked the public intersections that led to the traffic circle. This deprived people of the choice to use a public street and to see the protest.

I question if it was a good use of scarce Malvern police resources to assign those additional officers to block public roads. At no time did we interfere with traffic.
