Proposed Great Valley Voting Realignment Map

The Great Valley School Board will vote Monday night on whether to redraw voting map to more equally distribute the school district's population across the three regions.

The new map was created by the Voting Region Realignment Committee, chaired by Ellen Behrle, and presented to the full board at the March 11 work session.

The Daily Local noted some of the reasons the committee was formed in the first place and what the changes entail:

Currently, Region 1 is at 48.76 percent of the voting population, followed by Region 3 at 26.61 percent and Region 2 at 24.64. The realignment would change the percentages to 36.93 for Region 1, 32.34 for Region 2 and 30.73 for Region 3.

The biggest changes are taking two precincts from Region 1 (East Whiteland) and putting them in Region 2, and placing all of Willistown into Region 3.

“What we tried to do was keep the districts as contiguous as possible,” Behrle said. “You have to keep the precincts intact, that’s why it can’t be exactly 33.3 percent for each of the regions. We are pretty close, and when you take a look at it compared to where we are right now, we’ve really come a long way.”
