Malvern Prep Grad Makes Major League Debut Against Phillies

Tim Cooney started for the Cardinals at Thursday's game in St. Louis, lasting three innings in the 9-3 defeat of the Phillies.

Recent graduates of Malvern Prep probably saw a familiar face when they flipped on the Phillies’ game Thursday at 1:45 p.m.

Former school standout Tim Cooney made his major league debut with a short stint on the mound at Busch Stadium as the left-handed starter for the St. Louis Cardinals, facing the team whose championship parade he skipped school in 2008 to attend, according to csnphilly.com.

After getting a 3-0 cushion in the first inning, Cooney left the third inning, tallying three runs and seven hits in 2.1 innings. The Cardinals went on to defeat the Phillies 9-3.

Cooney was called up out of triple A to fill in for the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright, who tore an Achilles’ heel on Saturday, ending his season, according to Philly.com. St. Louis drafted Cooney out of Wake Forest in the third round of the 2012 draft.

The Collegeville native made his mark early when pitched for Malvern Prep, earning a co-MVP title while a sophomore in the Inter-Ac League. Cooney’s talents earned him a full scholarship to Wake Forest and Thursday’s debut in the big leagues.
