Lewis Waives Preliminary Hearing

The GVSD employee is headed to trial on charges connected to alleged indecent assaults of two boys at a summer camp in 2006 and 2007.

Matthew Lewis, the Great Valley School District employee facing charges of , waived his right to a preliminary hearing in an Oxford courthouse Monday, according to court documents.

Bail remained at 10 percent of $10,000 for each of the two sets of charges, which Lewis posted in December. The case will next move to county court; formal arraignment is set for March 22 in West Chester.

According to , in 2006 and 2007, Lewis allegedly tried to coax two boys into exposing themselves to him at a Scouts camp in Nottingham, Pa. In one instance, his attempt was successful and he touched the boy, who was approximately 11 or 12 years old at the time. Charges were filed Dec. 15, 2011, and Lewis surrendered himself a few days later.

Lewis, 27, of Willistown, faces a felony charge of endangering the welfare of children and several misdemeanors, including indecent assault of a person less than 13 years of age, indecent exposure and corruption of minors.

None of the allegations against Lewis involve the Great Valley School District, where he worked as a technology specialist in the elementary schools. Many parents and anger over the fact that the district did not place Lewis on administrative leave or otherwise remove him from the schools during the investigation. The superintendent has responded that the district's ability to act before charges were filed was limited by the law. Some , including bathroom use by faculty members, are being revised in the wake of Lewis's arrest.
