Nine Hours of Fine Art in Sugartown This Weekend

Saint Francis-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church will hold a two-day art show this weekend, featuring the work of 20 artists from the Philadelphia suburbs.

The show, titled Art for the Sake of Compassion, runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free, and proceeds from art sales benefit outreach programs in the parish’s community.

Five Malvern artists will have works on display: Amy Beebe, Sarah Bones, Monique Kendikian-Sarkessian, Janie LaPorte and Susan Wright.

Glyn Ruppe-Melnyk, rector of St. Francis, said in a press release that the event is meant to celebrate the joys of life while responding to the sorrows. 

“The simple spirituality of our patron, St. Francis, calls us to a life of compassion as well as celebration, and this event is one way we’re reaching out to our neighbors in need,” Ruppe-Melnyk said.

Aside from the Malvern residents, the list of artists who have submitted work to the show jury includes: Sharon DeVault, Peggy Ewing, Annette LeMaire, David Linton, Roe Murray and M.L. Corbin Sicoli of West Chester; Sally Ritter of Exton; Jennifer Kolmer of Berwyn; Alice Clemens Usinger of Media; Glyn Ruppe-Melnyk of Gradyville; Frank Mele of Drexel Hill; Dennis Macedo of Havertown; Blanche Levitt Torphy of Bryn Mawr; Indira Cariappa of Norristown; Lynnette Shelley of Ambler; Christina Peckham of Lawrenceville, N.J.; and Elly Handy of Hudson, Ohio.

Submitted works include paintings, drawings, photography and mixed-media.
