Police Reopen 20-Year-Old Upper Main Line Cold Case

On the morning of June 26, 1993, Radnor Police believe someone abducted 34-year-old Jennifer Tong, wife and mother, from her Marple home and drove her to Radnor Township before shooting her in the head.

Around 1 p.m. that day a woman reported discovering Tong dead in the back seat of a car parked in the 100 block of South Spring Mill Road in the Villanova section of the township. But half a dozen people saw the car running there around 7 a.m., said Sgt. Joe Maguire, who was a Radnor detective then and was on duty the weekend that Tong was found.

The Tong case was his, and Maguire is now assisting Radnor detectives in following up old leads, re-interviewing witnesses and resubmitting evidence to new technologies.

Tong’s murder is Radnor’s last unsolved homicide, and recently Chief William Colarulo decided to look back into the case.

According to Maguire, Tong was “not involved in anything illegal we could find,” but seemed to be targeted for murder. He said it was not a home invasion. 

He said her family is “very supportive of us reopening this case.” Recently they traveled to Staten Island, New York to interview Tong’s sisters. Her family is putting up reward money, and the police department is too, for tips that lead to a conviction in the case.
