Gay Marriage: Sen. Calls for End to Discrimination

The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing argument this week over the challenge to California’s Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage.

State Senator

State Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery/Delaware) is calling on the court to strike down the voter approved proposition.

“Denying same sex couples the right to marry is reminiscent of the days of the original fight for civil rights, a fight that was eventually won,” Leach said in a press release. “I believe that it is only a matter of time until the United States ends this modern-day discrimination. Soon we will look back on this day and wonder why marriage equality was ever an issue. I urge the Court today to stay on the right side of history with its decision.”

Leach has introduced a marriage equality bill in Pennsylvania, which is currently awaiting consideration by the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to a press release from Leach’s office.

Local Catholic Church

and has released a statement, saying “Marriage is defined by the Church as a sacred covenant between one man and one woman. Catholics are encouraged to support and defend the sacred institution of marriage.”  

Pennsylvania Voters    

More voters (47 percent) support same-sex marriage than oppose it (43 percent), according to a January Quinnipiac University poll, but the margin is still small.
