NWS: Severe Thunderstorm Alert for Route 1 Corridor Tuesday Night

Storm with potential for high winds, road ponding and dangerous cloud to ground lightning moving up the Route 1 Corridor. Alert in effect until 10:30p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather alert for Delaware and Chester counties as well as New Castle County, Del. At 9:36p.m. Tuesday,  NWS radar had detected a strong thunderstorm moving rapidly through the area.

A strong thunderstormwas detected 13 miles northwest of Newark, Delaware moving east at 25 to 35 miles per hour. The statement said the storm would be near West Grove at 9:45 p.m., Kennett Square around 10 p.m. and Upper Providence Township and Lima around 10:30 p.m. 

The alert warns that "very heavy rain will fall from this storm and will cause water to pond on road and quickly fill roadside ditches and small streams. Gusty winds and small hail are also possible with this storm along with dangerous cloud to ground lightning."
