MEDIA, PA — Delaware County's preeminent animal rescue group has gotten a substantial grant to help provide medical care for hundreds of cats and dogs at regional shelters.

Providence Animal Center in Media got a $50,000 grant from national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society to provide lifesaving transports and medical care for more than 500 at-risk dogs and cats from regional shelters Gloucester County Animal Shelter and ACCT Philly.

The center will pull, treat and place for adoption 400 cats from Gloucester County Animal Shelter, as well as 80 neonatal kittens and 25 medically challenging dogs from ACCT Philly.

"Being able to partner with Best Friends on these lifesaving efforts is a dream come true," said Justina Calgiano, Director of Public Relations for Providence Animal Center. "Their organization is one we have admired for so long, on our journey to become a lifesaving organization."

Once a high kill shelter with a 44 percent save rate, Providence Animal Center has transformed to a no-kill shelter with a 96 percent save rate. While working every day to maintain this, they are also focused on helping other shelters in the region working to achieve no-kill status.

Providence Animal Center has a history of working with both groups to save lives. The organization has worked with ACCT Philly for many years to transport animals. They also often rescue cats in need from Gloucester County Animal Shelter, which has the most animals to save in the state, with only a 56 percent save rate for cats. This grant will allow Providence Animal Center to ramp up their lifesaving efforts for both organizations.

"We know that no one shelter, group or rescue organization can do it alone, that’s why we are thrilled to provide Providence Animal Center with this grant that will increase lifesaving and further collaboration," said Audrey Lodato, Senior Strategist, East Region for Best Friends Animal Society.
