Long-Term Closure Expected For Some Solebury, New Hope Roads After Ida Flooding

When the Delaware River towns were walloped by flooding in the remnants of Hurricane Ida, several roads failed or endured structural damage.

SOLEBURY, PA — While the rainfall and flooding caused by Hurricane Ida's remnants has come and gone, several roadways in Solebury and New Hope weathered damage that will require more involved maintenance than just clearing debris.

"Many township and state roads sustained significant damage with closure of some being long term," the Solebury Township Police Department said Friday morning.

The Delaware River crested just before 7 p.m. Thursday at 13.39 feet, National Weather Service data from the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge shows. Water levels have now begun a steady decline, and are expected to return to normal depths of just a few feet over the weekend.

But the flooding left destruction behind. Some residents who live between the canal and the river were even urged to evacuate prior to the river cresting Thursday night.

While water levels are receding, officials advise caution near the river.

"The current is extremely strong with debris in the river, we advise to use caution near the riverbanks," police wrote.

Roadways with downed trees and power lines have now mostly been cleared and returned to form by police and the Road Department. But some roads will remain closed until structural repairs are made.

As of 8 a.m. Friday morning, these roads remain closed due to significant damage:

  • Route 263 between Center Bridge Road and Route 32.
  • Paxson Road between Comfort Road and Route 32.
  • Fleecy Dale Road between Carversville Road and Route 32.
  • Armitage Road between Sugan Road and River Road.
  • Atkinson Road at Pidcock Creek Bridge.
  • Route 32 between Route Ely Road and Fleecy Dale Road.

Forty state highways are reportedly closed in eastern Pennsylvania as of Friday morning.
