NEW HOPE, PA —The public is invited to celebrate the holiday season at Phillips’ Mill with an evening of Victorian winter traditions.

Drama at the Mill presents "Promises to Keep: A Yuletide Ceremony" on Thursday, December 19 beginning at 7 p.m. Introduced last year to a sellout audience, it returns to delight holiday revelers again this year.

These days the winter solstice is a time for seeing family, giving gifts, and endlessly coordinating celebration plans that might go wrong at any moment due to weather. But it wasn’t always that way. Come to the Mill to rewind the clock to a time before electricity illuminated the long winter nights, when families gathered around the hearth to tell ghost stories. The tradition was a popular aspect of Victorian life and provided an entertaining evening of fantastical tales.

There will be warm cider, a troupe of generous actors reading short stories by masters of the genre like M.R. James and Edith Wharton, and a playful candlelight vigil to ward off the chaos of the holiday season before heading back out into the night. Ghostly stories and tales of the unusual will enchant the audience and are appropriate for adults and children ages 10 and up.
