'Photography As Art' On Exhibit At Historic Bucks County Mill
32nd annual celebration of photography and photographers brings "visual feast" to Historic Phillips' Mill in Solebury Township.

NEW HOPE, PA — “Photography as Art,” the 32nd annual celebration of photography and photographers at Phillips’ Mill, is on exhibit through Friday, April 18.
In addition to a three-week juried exhibit, the Phillips’ Mill Community Association will hold a week-long Mill Photo Committee Members’ Show providing photography aficionados with an ample opportunity to savor "a large and extended visual feast."
This year, a panel of three jurors undertook the difficult task of selecting 150 photos from the 1,037 submitted by photographers from across the country. The jurors included Jennifer King, an internationally acclaimed landscape and fine-art photographer; Kristen King, a Bucks County high school teacher of photography for more than 35 years; and Nora Odendahl, a frequent exhibitor in past Phillips’ Mill photographic exhibitions and co-chair of the Mill Photo Committee.

The juried show is open to the public through Friday, April 18. Attendees can expect to see a wide range of photographic subjects, techniques, processes, and styles, all demonstrating an extraordinarily high-level of artistic quality. Landscapes, portraits, botanicals, architecture, abstracts, street photography, wildlife, black and white, and color — these and more will greet visitors to the historic gristmill.
On Sunday, April 20 the Photo Committee’s “Not Your Run-of-the-Mill Photo Show” will again fill the walls of the Mill with a lively variety of works and remain on view through Sunday, April 28. This show will include a special assignment section with images that have background stories of particular interest.
Gallery hours for both shows are Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 8 p.m. A donation of $5 is requested. All works will be available for purchase, as well as Phillips’ Mill Photo tees and totes.
Putting on two ambitious exhibitions is a complex and labor-intensive task, but the 20-plus Phillips’ Mill members of the Photo Committee always rise to the challenge. Some are experienced veterans who bring institutional knowledge and continuity to the job, and some are relative newcomers who bring fresh enthusiasm and energy. The operation includes producing and publicizing a call for art; processing digital submissions and working with the jurors; notifying entrants of results; receiving, curating, hanging, and labeling the photos; creating a printed program; holding an artists’ reception; managing sales; and recruiting and training volunteers who are staffing the shows.
As one committee member says, “We are a group of very different people brought together by a common bond: the love of photography. It’s a pleasure to be able to discover and to share with others works representing the art that means so much to us.”
New volunteers are always welcome to join the Mill Photo Committee. For information email photo@phillipsmill.org. Phillips’ Mill Community Association is located just north of New Hope at 2619 River Road, New Hope 18938. For information, call 215-862-0582 or visit www.phillipsmill.org .
