Activists Plan Women's March In Newtown Saturday

NEWTOWN, PA — As women's rights activists plan to march in the nation's capital this weekend, a group of local residents is planning their own action in Newtown.

The group is marching in solidarity with the national Women's March happening in Washington, D.C., this Saturday for women's rights and in opposition to Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who is undergoing Senate confirmation hearings this week to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Barrett's history of supporting state restrictions on abortion has spurred pro-choice advocates to mobilize against her nomination.

Following the election of Donald Trump, millions of people participated in The Women's March on January 21, 2017, a worldwide protest that marked the largest single-day protest in U.S. history. Since then, the protest has become an annual event in January, though Saturday's march is a unique occasion marked by Barrett's nomination.

Participants will gather at Linton Memorial Park shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday before marching to the intersection of West Washington Avenue and North Sycamore Street, where the protest will take place.

The event will be happening on the same day Trump supporters plan to stage a car parade from Newtown to Doylestown, though organizers say their route will not interfere with the rally.

Organizers are asking those who plan to attend wear masks and social distance during the march.
