NORTHAMPTON, PA — A neighborhood Mexican cantina and tequila bar in Bucks County is closing its doors.

The owners of El Barrio Cantina and Tequila Bar made the closing announcement last week on their social media pages.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we have to make this announcement. El Barrio will be closing its doors as the final day of operation will be Tuesday, Oct. 28,” said owners Dave and Alyson. “We know this news is going to be difficult for a lot of people as El Barrio is a second home to many of you. This is so very difficult for us as well, but we know we have the support to make it through.”

El Barrio has been serving Mexican fare and drinks for the past six years at the Village Shires Shopping Center on Buck Road in the Holland section of Northampton Township. “El Barrio” means neighborhood and that’s what it became over the years to its customers who found it a “warm and welcoming” place to hang out amidst its rustic Mexican style.

“We hope to see as many of you as possible for our last week we will be open,” the owners wrote. “Please be patient with us as we will be running out of food and drinks as we are trying not to waste anything we won’t have time to go through. We know lots of tears, hugs, and margaritas will be shared this week.”

The good news is that “this is not the end of El Barrio. We will be opening up an El Barrio food truck,” the owners announced. “You can still enjoy our delicious food from the food truck, Uber Eats, Grub Hub, and Door Dash. We will use our Facebook group to keep everyone updated and provide weekly schedules on where we will be. We are looking at an opening date at the end of November.

“We want to thank our amazing staff that has worked with us through the years,” the owners said. “You have all put your hearts and souls into making El Barrio the special place it is, and we could not have asked for more.”

They added, “We also want to thank our amazing community of customers that has supported us day in and day out. We seriously have had the best staff and customers that have turned into the best family and friends. “How lucky we are to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

In just a few short hours of posting, their post had received more than 300 reactions and close to 100 comments, everyone expressing sadness at the loss of the eatery.

“It is so incredibly heartbreaking to hear this,” writes Jackie. “I know you have put everything into this business and truly are amazing people. Sending you all the best wishes for your food truck and I’ll be happy to share and support you always.”

Jill wrote, “I will definitely miss El Barrio Cantina. I’ve been going there since it opened. You had the best Cinco de Mayo and Halloween parties. Great staff, great food and margaritas! I’ll miss the wide selection of draft beers and the takeout store. I wish you the best of luck!”

Allison added, “You have put your heart and soul into this business. The new venture will be amazing!”
