NEWTOWN BOROUGH — This year’s Newtown Halloween Parade had it all, from the funny to the scary side of the season, as several hundred parents and kids took the annual Halloween Walk through town Saturday morning.

Everyone was there, from firefighters and a crew of motley pirates to John Lennon and Ringo Starr from the Beatles. Even the Space Shuttle Discovery came in for a landing.

Standing out from the crowd was a human dolphin who performed tricks for fish, an English horse and rider, a pack of Crayons, Spider-Man, and a family of Gnomes. And sending some serious Halloween chills through this year's Halloween gathering was Cece Hess as a scary clown, who took first place in Halloween horror.

Dressed in costume, the members of the Council Rock High School North Marching Band set the tone for the event, playing the theme from “Ghostbusters” as they led a parade of costumed children, adults, pets, and families on a walk through town, from the Stocking Works to Brian Gregg Park.

Along the way, State Street shop owners, customers, and residents watched as Halloween passed by, many marveling at the creativity that is always a part of this hometown parade.

At Brian Gregg Memorial Park the band performed more favorites, including “Hey Baby” and their signature song, “Louie, Louie.”

Following the performance, Newtown Borough Recreation Board member Tracy Osecki announced the winners of this year's costume contest, which is organized by the recreation board.

The costumes were judged by Newtown Borough Police Officer Rubia Ebert, Newtown Borough Secretary Judy Musto, Newtown Borough Police Chief James Sabath and Mayor John Burke.

Capturing this year’s top prize - the Mayor’s Trophy - were twins Anthony and Elliott Boccuti of Newtown. They paraded down the street in a homemade fire truck, equipped with a garden hose and flashing lights.

There were lots of other prizes, too, with gifts donated by the merchants of Newtown, including Second Sin, Turning Point, Triple Sun, Blue Pooch, Green Parrot, La Stalla, the Clubhouse, Newtown Bike Shop, Zebra-Striped Whale, Kenny’s Meals, Wawa, Newtown Hardware House, State Street Kitchen, Lovey Poke, Star Bucks, the Athletic Shoe Shop, and Pat’s Colonial Kitchen.

The Newtown Borough Recreation Board organized the parade and provided the ribbons.

“There’s a lot of work that goes into putting on this parade,” said Osecki. “I want to give a shout out to the Newtown Borough Recreation Board and to all the local businesses who donated prizes. This year we have some of the best prizes we have ever had. “I’d also like to give a big shout out to the Newtown Borough and Newtown Township police departments who closed the streets and escorted the parade through town.”

All in all, it was another memorable “small-town America” moment on the streets of historic Newtown Borough.
