Local Student Gets Surprise Party From Parents After Coming Out As Gay

A New Jersey teenager, who goes to George School in Newtown, wasn't sure what her parents would say when she came out as gay to them. Their conversation was "awkward but sweet," 17-year-old Kinsey Ratzman told NBC Philadelphia.

What happened a week later was even sweeter.

Ratzman's parents told her they were having an early Fourth of July party and sent her to the mall with her cousin. When Ratzman got back, she saw rainbow cups and plates, a rainbow cake and all of her family all there to celebrate her.

They were throwing her a surprise coming out party.

Her party has been a hit on social media, where her first tweet about it getting more than 10,000 retweets and nearly 30,000 likes. She's been featured in USA Today, NBC and BuzzFeed.

Ratzman lives in Mercer County and goes to school at George School, a private school in Newtown, Pennsylvania.

“I love being a part of such a caring and awesome community,” she told BuzzFeed. “The best part is seeing how happy the party has made everyone.”

“Especially in light of the Pulse shootings this past Pride Month, our community needs a little joy and hope, and I’m glad to say my family has helped contribute to that.”
