HARRISBURG, PA — A global company has plans to expand its operations in Pennsylvania, adding more than 1,700 new jobs as part of a $1.4 billion expansion project, officials announced Wednesday.

The United Parcel Service (UPS), the world's largest package delivery company, will expand in four locations in Pennsylvania, creating 1,721 new, full-time jobs, Gov. Tom Wolf announced Wednesday.

The company will expand in Philadelphia, Cumberland, Dauphin, and Northampton counties as part of a $1.4 billion investment, which will include building renovations, equipment, and infrastructure improvements.

Wolf, in announcing the news, said UPS "is a company that is still growing at a rapid rate, serving the needs of people in all corners of the commonwealth on a daily basis.”

According to information from Wolf's office, UPS received a funding proposal from the Department of Community and Economic Development for $2.7 million in Job Creation Tax Credits to be distributed following the creation of the new jobs, $5.6 million in Infrastructure and Facilities Improvement Program funding, and $659,400 in grants for workforce training and development.

“Our investment in this global company will not only ensure that customers across Pennsylvania will continue to receive the service they expect, but also local communities will benefit from the combined creation and retention of thousands of good-paying, full-time jobs," the governor said.

The project is currently underway and will be fully executed by the end of September 2023, according to Casey Smith, the communications director for the PA Department of Community & Economic Development.

UPS, in a statement about the expansion, said it is "excited to bring new jobs to Pennsylvania" and is "committed to engaging in the communities" where the expansion is planned.

“From small business owners growing their customer base to manufacturers moving parts and products, and e-tailers looking for efficient and fast order fulfillment, companies of all sizes throughout the Northeast will benefit from UPS’s latest global network transformation initiative," UPS Chief Information and Engineering Officer Juan Perez said.

UPS was founded in 1907 as a messenger company in the United States. Since then it has grown into a multi-billion-dollar corporation. In addition to being the world's largest package delivery company, UPS is a provider of specialized transportation and logistics services, managing the flow of goods, funds, and information in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
