HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania is nearing 90,000 coronavirus cases after 479 additional positive cases of COVID-19 were reported Sunday, bringing the statewide total to 89,854.

There have been 6,753 total deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Pennsylvania after four new deaths were reported Sunday. Out of the state's total deaths, 4,592 have occurred in nursing or personal care homes.

“As the entire state is now in the green phase, we must remain committed to protecting against COVID-19 by wearing a mask, practicing social distancing and avoiding large gatherings this holiday weekend,” Secretary of Health Rachel Levine said in a news release. “Pennsylvania has been a model for the country on how to reopen effectively using a careful, measured approach. However, the virus has not gone away and we are seeing cases rise, especially in Southwest Pennsylvania.”

In Allegheny County, which has recently experienced a spike in cases that resulted in the closure of bars and restaurants, 127 cases were reported Sunday — down from 150 on Saturday. The number of new cases in the county during the outbreak now stands at 3,557.

After an alarming spike in coronavirus cases last week week, Allegheny County Health Department Director Debra Bogen ordered all bars, restaurants and the Rivers Casino to close for a week. The order, which went into effect Friday, does not ban food establishments from returning to take-out and delivery service as most did in earlier stages of the outbreak.

Additionally, Bogen ordered the cancelation of all events and activities of more than 25 people.
The moves came after the county announced 233 new coronavirus cases Thursday — more than double the previous single-day record of 110 set on Wednesday.

For the 26th day in a row, the United States on Saturday set a record for the average number of daily cases reported nationwide, according to The Washington Post. The rolling seven-day average for new cases was 47,493, up nearly 11,000 from one week ago.

As of Saturday evening, there were more than 2.8 million confirmed coronavirus cases and nearly 130,000 deaths, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Florida has set another daily record for new infections, reporting 11,458 confirmed cases on Saturday. The state is among several that have reported multiple daily records since late June.
