A weekend storm forecasters have been eyeing since earlier this week as a potential source of winter precipitation will likely result in heavy rain but no snow, according to the National Weather Service. The system could also bring a rare January thunderstorm.

In the latest forecast models from the National Weather Service, it's likely rain will descend upon the Philadelphia region overnight Friday into Saturday. Expect "heavy" rainfall Saturday, and a possible thunderstorm.

Weekend temperatures will be too mild for snow and ice but an "intense band of rain" will move through Eastern Pennsylvania mid-day Saturday, AccuWeather said.
