Newtown Police Log: DUI Arrests, Fraud & More

The Newtown Township Police Department reported five DUI arrests in the past week.

NEWTOWN, PA — The Newtown Township Police Departments reported the following incidents between April 16 and April 22, 2021.

April 16

  • A Newtown Township resident contacted police around 2:30 p.m. to report a fraud. Someone emailed her and said they hacked her webcam and had an incriminating video of her. They threatened to release the video if she didn't respond to an email attachment. Police confirmed that the email was a scam.
  • Around 8 p.m., police responded to a report of a drunk driver in a black Honda Civic in the Newtown Veterinarian Hospital parking lot. The responding officer detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver was unable to perform field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence.
  • Around 11 p.m., police carried out a traffic stop on the driver of a beige Hyundai for a traffic violation on the Newtown Bypass near Buck Road. The responding officer detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver was unable to perform field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence.

  • Around 1:30 a.m., police carried out a traffic stop on the driver of a silver Mitsubishi for a vehicle code violation on the Newtown Bypass near Campus Drive. The responding officer detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver was unable to perform field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence while under the legal drinking age of 21.
  • Police were called to Acme Market on West Road around 7 a.m. for a report of fraudulent credit card use. The investigation is ongoing.

April 18

  • Shortly after midnight, police carried out a traffic stop on the driver of a white Chrysler for a vehicle code violation on the Newtown Bypass near Buck Road. The responding officer detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver was unable to perform field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence.

The responding officer detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver was unable to perform field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence while under the legal drinking age of 21.
  • A Newtown Township resident contacted police around noon to report credit card fraud. She explained that there were fraudulent purchases on her credit card that she was able to cancel. The purchases did not go through and there was no monetary loss.

April 20

  • Around 10:45 a.m., a Newtown Township resident contacted police and reported a fraud. She explained that in the past week she received five different debit cards and checks in her name from various banks. Police advised her to notify the credit bureaus and put a fraud alert on her bank account.

April 21

  • The Newtown-Makefield Truck Enforcement Unit conducted a commercial vehicle safety detail on Washington Avenue in Newtown Borough. The unit is made up of officers from the Newtown Township Police Department, the Newtown Borough Police Department and the Upper Makefield Township Police Department. During the detail, six trucks were stopped and inspected. Two warnings were issued for violations.
  • A Newtown Township resident contacted police at noon to report a fraud. He explained that he received a debit card in the mail for an account that he never opened. The incident was referred to the bank’s fraud department.

April 22

  • Around 12:15 a.m., police carried out a traffic stop on the driver of a green Subaru Forrester for a vehicle code violation on the Newtown Bypass near Buck Road. Suspected methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were discovered and seized as evidence, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
  • Police were called to TD Bank on Upper Silver Lake Road at 3 p.m. for a report of an attempted fraud. The driver of a white BMW in the drive-through lane had attempted to cash a fraudulent check. The investigation is ongoing.
