Newtown Police Log: Phone Scams, DUIs & More

NEWTOWN, PA — The Newtown Township Police Department reported the following incidents between March 26 and March 31.

March 26

Shortly after midnight, the driver of a white Chevy pickup truck was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop on the Newtown Bypass near Buck Road.

Around 1 p.m., police investigated a reported retail theft at McCaffrey's Food Market. The investigation is ongoing.

March 27

Around 3:30 a.m., the driver of a black Lexus IS was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop on Penns Trail and Newtown Yardley Road.

While on routine patrol near the Newtown Farmer's Market around 4:30 a.m., an officer observed a suspicious vehicle parked in the rear parking lot. The officer made contact with two people and issued them a citation for underage drinking as a result of the investigation.

March 30

Around 3:30 a.m., the driver of a black Saturn was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop on the Newtown Bypass near Campus Drive.

March 31

Around 10 a.m., a Newtown Township resident contacted police to report a fraud. Someone wrote a series of checks from his account at several locations. The total reported loss was $1,000.

At 8:15 p.m., a Wrightstown Township resident contacted police to report an attempted fraud. She received an email about a recent Amazon order totaling $5,989.68. The items listed included a Samsung TV, a gaming system and a line of credit. The resident said she did not make the purchases and they did not appear in her order history. Police determined that the email did not come from Amazon and that it was an attempt to scam people into calling the provided number to learn their personal information and credit numbers.
