Newtown police are asking for the public's help after several residents had their vehicles stolen and their catalytic converts removed.

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — The Newtown Township Police Department reported the following incidents between April 9 and April 15, 2021.

April 9

A Newtown Township resident contacted police around 1 p.m. to report an unemployment fraud. She explained that an unknown man applied for unemployment compensation through her company. The application was canceled by the unemployment office.

Around 4:30 p.m., police were called to TD Bank on West Road for a reported fraud. A man attempted to get account information with a fake ID and was last seen walking toward the Acme parking lot, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

April 10

Police were called to Univest Bank on Swamp Road around 11 a.m. for a man attempting to cash a fraudulent check. The man left on foot prior to police arrival, and other Univest branches were notified in case the man attempted it at other locations. Shortly after, the man was located at the Richboro bank branch and was arrested by the Northampton Township Police Department. He was sent to Bucks County Jail. Bail was set at 10 percent of $25,000.

April 11

While on routine patrol around 2 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle in the parking lot of the Newtown Skate Park. Nearby, two young male teens were sitting on metal bleachers. The officer made contact with them and a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia was discovered and taken as evidence. One of the teens was issued a citation and their parents were contacted to pick them up.

Around 11:15 p.m., police conducted a traffic stop on the driver of a silver Scion XA for a vehicle code violation on the Newtown Bypass near Woodbourne Road. A small amount of marijuana was discovered and taken as evidence, and citations were issued.

April 14

Around 2 a.m., police conducted a traffic stop on the driver of a silver Volvo S60 for a vehicle code violation on Richboro Road near Mill Pond Road. The officer detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver was unable to perform field sobriety tests, police said, and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence.

In the early morning hours, Newtown Township police and Lower Makefield Township police responded to various reports of stolen vehicles that occurred overnight. The Newtown Township vehicle was taken from a home on Washington Crossing Road. All of the vehicles have since been recovered with their catalytic converters removed. Surveillance video collected from the area showed that the suspects traveled throughout the area in search of a particular type of vehicle. Newtown police are asking for local residents and business owners who are located along the corridors and neighborhoods of Washington Crossing Road, Linton Hill Road, Frost Lane, Lower Dolington Road, Kirkwood Drive and the Newtown Business Commons to review any available video surveillance footage on April 14 from 4 a.m. through 7 a.m. and contact Newtown Township Police Detectives at 215-579-1000, ext. 288, if you have any video footage showing the suspect's vehicle (see photo above).

At 9:45 a.m., police were called to a Newtown Township home for a report of an attempted burglary. The investigation is ongoing.

April 15

A Newtown Township resident contacted police around 12 p.m. to report fraudulent activity on his credit card. He disputed the charges with the bank and has since closed the account.

At 12:30 p.m., police were dispatched to North Sycamore Street for the report of a stolen vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.

Around 10:45 p.m., police conducted a traffic stop on the driver of a white Toyota Corolla for a vehicle code violation near Linton Hill Road and Merion Drive. The officer detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver was unable to perform field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. The driver refused to submit to chemical testing and was processed at Northampton Township Police Department and released.
