CORRECTION: Family Unity Day Festival This SUNDAY at Simmons Park

The 21st annual festival kicks off at noon on Sunday, Aug. 26.

The 21st annual Family Unity Day will take place from noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, at Simmons Park, Arch and Oak streets in Norristown.

The African American cultural festival will feature daylong entertainment at the Martin Luther King Open Air Plaza, a children's villaage, vendor's marketplace, ethnic cuisine and health and community resources. 

The event focuses on six disciplines – arts, music, education, sports, health and entrepreneurship and is intended to share the richness of African American culture, and promote community wellness.

"Family Unity Day at Simmons Park has truly become a community initiative," festival founder Paula Robinson wrote to Norristown Patch.

Some of the community groups and businesses involved in this years festival include Tabernacle International Church, Norristown Clubs United, Wyde Bodi Auto Club, Strategic Wear, 100 Watts, Main Street Water Ice and the Norristown Men of Excellence.

"Unity Day has always been about building positive family and community experiences," wrote Robinson.

This year's Children's Village includes a black history exihibit as well as games and contests. Platinum Sound Productions will maintain the sound stage with all-day entertainment ending with live music from Frankie Snowden & Friends.
